THE NEXT ASIAN MIRACLE

THE ROLE OF THE STATE. THE NEXT ASIAN MIRACLE examines the prospects for the economies of South East Asia in light of the dramatic ascent of China and India. In this 8-part documentary, we investigate the socio-economic development of Cambodia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Singapore and Vietnam. From one country to another, each episode focuses on a specific topic that proved to be a major component for growth in the region. South East Asian economies, once heavily riddled with state involvement, have seen a wave of market liberalization in recent years. Private enterprises are the new engines of growth and have increasingly taken over some roles of the state such as the provision of public goods. While this trend has contributed to the various nations’ developmental objectives, the real outcome of the increasingly freer markets has been met with mixed reactions.
