THE NEXT ASIAN MIRACLE
THE ROLE OF THE STATE. THE NEXT ASIAN MIRACLE examines the prospects for the economies of South East Asia in light of the dramatic ascent of China and India. In this 8-part documentary, we investigate the socio-economic development of Cambodia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Singapore and Vietnam. From one country to another, each episode focuses on a specific topic that proved to be a major component for growth in the region. South East Asian economies, once heavily riddled with state involvement, have seen a wave of market liberalization in recent years. Private enterprises are the new engines of growth and have increasingly taken over some roles of the state such as the provision of public goods. While this trend has contributed to the various nations’ developmental objectives, the real outcome of the increasingly freer markets has been met with mixed reactions.
THE NEXT ASIAN MIRACLE
MANUFACTURING - MOVING UP TO HIGHER VALUE. Manufacturing has been the traditional economic bedrock of South East Asian economies. In an increasingly globalized world, the region is opening up its economy to investors and luring foreign companies with a pool of cheap labour. However, in an increasingly unpredictable economic climate, the vulnerabilities of an export-oriented economy become ever more significant.

It includes contributions by many of those who knew Nureyev during this period - principally his long-time friend Yasemin Pirinccioglu, who worked with him to stage "The Sleeping Beauty" in Istanbul, and is the keeper of his Turkish archive. It combines these with hitherto unseen footage from private films made at the time.
