DISTANT SHORES EP 37 PASSAGE TO GERMANY
It's the end of the sailing season in Sweden and autumn storms are brewing. The Shards set sail from Gothenburg to run south from the weather down the Kattegat through the Straits islands of Denmark to Kiel City, the sailing capital of Germany where all children are given sail training in school. It is also a base for the German Navy's Baltic fleet and Paul and Sheryl learn about its history on a visit to the Laboe Naval Memorial before leaving the Baltic for the North Sea by way of the Kiel Canal.

Back in the North Sea, Paul and Sheryl make their first stop in Norderney, one of the East Frisian Islands of Germany before entering the Dutch canals at the major port of Delfzijl. They travel the picturesque standing-mast route through the countryside before sailing to ports bordering Lake Ijssel and conclude their voyage in Amsterdam.
EASTER ISLAND
Easter Island, With its’ fascinating gigantic stone statues scattered around the island, is presented today as the example of a civilisation collapse due to an ecological disaster of great magnitude. In this scenario, deforestation is said to have triggered chaos, famine and war, leading to the violent destruction of its sculptural heritage, the decline of its civilization and the near extinction of its population. The Franco-Belgian expedition led in 1935 is considered to be the benchmark study on Easter island. Belgian archeologist Henri Lavachery and the Swiss Alfred Métraux led the mission, after French archaeologist, Charles Watelin, died during the journey,. They brought back the head of a statue to France and a whole statue back to Belgium, which is now exhibited at the Musée du Cinquantenaire in Brussels. 65 years after this expedition, Nicolas Cauwe, curator at the Musée du Cinquantenaire in Brussel, decided to launch a new excavation campaign to find out more about the history of this statue and investigate further into the history of the mythical Island. After 10 years a multidisciplinary scientific research this expedition has led to astonishing new findings. contradicting the whole theories about tribal warfare and the violent destruction of the statues. The disappearance of the forest is not solely due to man, monuments have been turned into cemeteries rather than sacked, skeletons show no signs of malnutrition and statues have been layed down on the ground with the utmost care. All these evidences lead to a new understanding of the fate of this Polynesian population trying to cope and adapt to climate changes while shifting towards a new social and religious organization.

We fly over the waters that separate the Venezuelan coast from Los Roques, we are going to visit this archipelago together with Francesca and her father Gian Marco, Venezuelan by birth but of Italian origin, who are both passionate about the islands and the sea. THE WORLD'S SMALLEST OPERA HOUSE. "If you can make it there, you can make it anywhere". That's the vision people from all over the world have of New York. This report takes a look behind the scenes of the world's smallest opera house, in the heart of New York. Tony Amato, the son of an Italian butcher, thought when he came to New York in the 40s that he could make it too by realizing his dream of owning an opera house. The house is 3 stories high and three windows wide. The hall feels no bigger than a living room, however its 107 seats are always sold out. Tony Amato continues to be the center and linchpin of this miniature opera. Tony is barely 5 foot tall, with his sneakers and the small, wiry man seems to be held up by his pant-suspenders. His voice is persuasive, his eyes bright. He conducts, sings, jumps, laughs and grumbles all at once. At 88 years of age, Maestro Tony Amato is in the middle of the season's last production.

Nowhere else but in Mongolia is the threat of desertification more visible and acute. 7% of the steppes are already eaten up by The gobi desert which covers already 40% of the whole territory. The once green paradise of the Khar-us Lake in the western part of the country, has nearly dried out in the past five years, raising tensions among the herdsmen who now have to fight for their share of water. The nearby Khairkhan Jagarlant glacier is melting at high speed and local young people are left with no choice than to leave. A vicious circle NGO’s are trying to avoid by providing reconversion schemes based on traditional artscraft and local products.
