MANHATTAN (1609)
Some four centuries ago, Protestants from Belgium and the North of France, chased from their region by war and religion, left to build a new life in the New World. Upon their arrival, they purchased virgin lands from the Indians where they started a settlement, never imagining that one day it would become the most famous city in the world: New York. This film is about the pre-history of New York. It is above all that of Europe of the 17th century, ravaged by a terrible war of religion: men and women, fleeing an intolerant Old Continent, abandoning their trades, their families, and the vast majority of their goods, to find refuge in a savage land in order to live freely and in peace. It corrects the historical misconception still recorded in our school books, which has it that Peter Stuyvesant is the city’s founder. It explains that many years before he arrived on the scene, the navigator Henry Hudson, the original 30 families from the North of France and the South of Belgium and governor Peter Minuit, were the real founders of what became the state and the city of New York.

THE ASIAN CENTURY
INDIA'S RETURNING NRIS. Having risen from the ashes of one of the poorest economies, India now is walking the road to becoming a superpower. Come the turn of the century, many of the Indian Diaspora are flooding the shores of India, reversing the brain drain that was once plaguing India. The reverberations of India’s IT boom called upon tens of thousands of Non-Resident Indians, luring these skilled professionals back to their native soil. Within the last 3 years, 25,000 Non-Resident Indians have returned, replanting their roots back in India, making up an estimated 70,000 Returned Non-Resident Indians in Bangalore alone. Some return with hopes of immersing their children in Indian culture, some for the many job opportunities and challenges. And some are armed with a vision to change the face of India. However, alongside the sea of job opportunities are infrastructural setbacks. Having underinvested in infrastructure for years, India now sorely lags behind. Will these Returning Non-Resident Indians be welcomed by those who chose to tough it out in India during the hard times? Are they merely opportunists or are they heroes armed with a vision? Could India’s returning sons and daughters be the key to unleashing its new dawn?
THE ASIAN CENTURY
KOREA'S YOUTH EMPLOYMENT. South Korea boasts a population with one of the most highly educated youth in the world. However, with one in ten youth being unemployed, the nation’s youth unemployment rate has also hit its peak in a decade. The significance of education in Korean society has its beginnings in the Joseon dynasty when state examinations were the gates to officialdom. However, now the abundance of degree holders in the market has diluted its worth. What was once considered a golden ticket to success, has now condescended into a must-have minimum qualification. Only a mere 30,000 suitable job openings are available as compared to the 560, 000 students who graduate every year. Consequently, more emphasis is placed on entering one of the top three universities in Korea, to be differentiated from the sea of degree holders. So much so that it has become an obsession. With young graduates having difficulties in finding a full time job, it is no wonder the part time job market is rapidly expanding. It has become almost impossible to distinguish a part-time worker from an undergraduate or postgraduate. But in spite of growing unemployment among young graduates, families still chase the degree, despite some amounting to heavy debt. Among the rest of the world, Korean households spend the most on private education. Will the dreams of the young and educated continue to be shattered? Will over education be the ruin of Korea’s economy?

NOMAD'S LAND
ETHIOPIA. With the label of "cradle of humanity", Ethiopia is adorned with a legendary aura... It is here that the man was born, here he would have his first steps to conquer the world. Christophe Cousin takes its movement... In "Nomads Land in Ethiopia," he crosses the South to the North because it is on the road, always lively, always alive that still today reveals the true face of the "men in the face burned "as they are called Ethiopians... The road is the best way to tell this country nomadic by nature. Ethiopia There are thousands of pilgrims, nomads by whole tribes, caravans, men, gold, dust, camels, mules and salt... All the ingredients required to advance to the sweat of his forehead to the hope and the unknown... In this journey which is more like an adventure, he encounters Gabra, an ethnic group in the border with Kenya which takes refreshment water in wells that were dug into the rock there for centuries and staying in their camp... he then joined the border with Sudan, to the great gold rush that has never known the country. Deep in the forest, holes that can reach 40 meters deep have the smell of death. Then he joined the pilgrims to the monastery of Debre Damo north and ends its journey in the heart of Dallol meaning "disintegrated" in language Afar... Borrowing this time not the camel and the men who run after the spice of life...
