      • VOLCANIC PLANET

Volcanoes are the most extreme, dramatic, and explosive forces of nature on our planet. Volcanoes have produced many of the most valuable minerals - and most of the arable soil on earth. Every day, they are exploding around the world. When the Yellowstone Super Volcano blows (and it is now 48,000 years overdue to do so), it will destroy most of life on North America. Award-winning filmmaker Peter Rowe has climbed and filmed 19 volcanoes, and tells the story of them, the adventures of climbing them, the people who live beside them, and the scientists who risk their lives to study them, in "Volcanic Planet". He also convinces his climbing partner George Kourounis to get married (!?) on the exploding lip of one of them. Filmed in Congo, Iceland, Italy, Vanuatu, Hawaii, Tonga, Turkey, Guatemala, New Zealand, Costa Rica and under the Pacific Ocean, "Volcanic Planet" is a fast-paced high-voltage tour of the world’s most active smoking mountains.

      • THE ASIAN CENTURY

PHILIPPINES OFWS. The Philippines is one of the fastest growing economies among the ASEAN 5. And, in 2010, it showed such sterling results that the IMF even predicted it to be the fastest growing economy in ASEAN, second only to Thailand. Today, whilst the economy is growing at a modest 6%, investor and consumer confidence, according to market analysts, continue to soar. A new golden era for the Philippines? Maybe. Maybe not. That is because against all the "hoo-hah", unemployment rates are still climbing and the Philippines continues to carry the disgraceful mantle of "The Sick Man of Asia. " There are now about 1 million OFW’s (Overseas Filipino Workers) and 11 million overseas Filipinos worldwide. "People, it seems, are the Philippines best export. ". But, of late, there are signs that the Philippines’ overdependence on remittances has created long-term cracks in the social fabric and an economy that is fragile in the face of a global crisis.

      • THE ASIAN CENTURY

SHANGHAI'S TWO-CHILDREN POLICY. China, with a population of 1. 3 billion, would hardly be in need of a baby boom. However, Shanghai paints a starkly different picture. Ageing faster than Japan, a third of its people could be over 60 years ld in just 10 years time. Although already China's most populous city, Shanghai is in need of more babies. In a bid to solve the problem of acute labour shortages and strains on medical and welfare systems in the near future, there has been a gradual rollback of the one-child policy. Couples who meet the strict criteria are allowed t have a second child. But are they able t afford the various cots that come with having a second child? The rat race in Shanghai already begins at the age of a toddler. With MBA programs for juniors, young children are prematurely thrown into the adulthood. With a schedule as packed as an adult's, no room is left for a healthy childhood. Having over 40 branches of FasTracKids schools in Shanghai alone, it is clearly a reflection of the hunger for an early head start for children. Brought up in a generation that adhered strictly to the one child policy, will the mindset of its people change? Will parents be able to cope with the pressures accompanied with a second child? Is this an effective solution to solving Shanghai's problems?
