This series examine various species that have made a comeback among our European landscapes, providing "close to home" examples. We are now fully aware that every coming year brings about a reduction in our planet's biodiversity. One in eight species of bird, one in four mammals, and one in three amphibians are threatened with extinction by the end of the 21st century. But this is not necessarily a lost cause. With a little helping hand, Mother Nature possesses magnificent vital energy. Even in our immediate surroundings, in a highly urbanised and industrialised Europe, some species of wildlife, which had been virtually wiped out, are reappearing. While the police work to dismantle the prominent drug trafficking networks, the environmental police track down poachers, whose activity is particularly intense. Their searches bring them in daily contact with the Garimpeiros, illegal Brazilian immigrants who work at gold panning sites, in contradiction with the law. Gold trafficking therefore doubles up as weapons trafficking and prostitution.

      • NOMAD'S LAND

        MEKONG. Continuing the theme of itinerancy, Christophe Cousin takes us on this new journey through two countries: Vietnam and Cambodia, on a river trip up the Mekong to meet the people who live by it. After a miraculous haul of ‘rice-fish’ in the South China Sea, where the river ends its own journey, he goes into the delta to meets some prawn fishermen, or ‘aquatic tramps’ as they are known locally. Christophe then boards a taxi-boat and goes to the floating market of Can Thô. After accompanying a family on its way to sell pineapples on the ‘nine-dragon river’, he arrives at the border and leaves the bustle of Vietnam behind him. In Cambodia, he returns to dry land and gets to know some unusual salesmen who have come from India to sell mosquito nets. Finally, our explorer ends his voyage in the gemstone mines of Ratanakiri.
