“Special Operations” are special divisions of military, police or intelligence services that are highly qualifi ed in specifi c areas of urban warfare and in a variety of special weapons and technology. Over the past forty years, all of the world’s superpowers have built up these groups in order to better fi ght wars, to counter terrorism and to conduct high-stakes police actions. This episode examines the history of such organizations, from the Green Berets, WWII paratroopers and naval special warfare units through to the Seal Team 6, the British SAS, and private contractors, including Black Water and Brown and Root. Showing how these operators are trained, how they plan, and what weaponry and tactical gear they use, the introductory episode of CQB provides viewers with a fast-paced overview of the techniques, strategies and equipment that have been successfully used by Military Special Operations.

This episode provides viewers with an intimate perspective on what it feels like to be “inside the heads” of special police personnel, and how their use of military-style strategies and equipment allows them to save lives. From riot control in South Africa and the lessons learned from its excesses, to Los Angeles Police Chief Robert Gates’ creation of an elite police S.W.A.T team, CQB will showcase how, over the past 30 years, the fi ght against urban crime has evolved into a military scenario, with both sides using increasingly complex weaponry and tactics.

After the fall of the soviet union many countries remained in dispute in the early nineties despite eastern Europe‘s independence. In 1994 a bitter confl ict broke out between the forces of the Chechnen independence movement and the Russian regular army. Despite overwhelming manpower, weaponry and air support, the Russian forces were unable to establish effective permanent control over the mountainous area due to many successful Chechen guerrilla raids. Improvised Explosive Devices were one of the most eff ective methods employed in these disastrous raids and were the back drop to many Close Quarter Battle scenarios exchanged between the two sides.

CLOSE Quarter Battle - EP. 07
In 1968, a new form of military policing was being developed in a rural area north of Los Angeles. The Los Angeles Police Department sent an observer to this unit, and he, in turn, took this knowledge back to the LAPD. This contributed to the development of the department’s fi rst Special Weapons and Tactics (S.W.A.T.) team. This CQB episode takes an historical journey to examine how this incident aff ected and changed police tactics around the world. Using CQB’s trademark “sub-second” analysis, the program also looks at how police S.W.A.T. teams train, plan and equip themselves for the challenges of urban combat. The dramatization of a 1980s S.W.A.T. siege of a gang safe-house demonstrates the complicated challenge of protecting innocent people who might be caught in the line of fi re, as well as the specifi cs of the squad’s training regimen, how they communicated, and the special equipment they used.

The Bosnian War was an extraordinarily complex event, with many layers of military involvement including NATO forces, national militaries, irregular paramilitary forces, mujahedeen revolutionaries, private security companies, and international intelligence personnel. One tactic in particular struck fear into the hearts of the military and civilians alike: the use of snipers positioned in high buildings. This edition of CQB investigates this specifi c combat technique and how it was countered by opposing forces. Taking viewers inside a “sniper‘s den,” the program explains how this tactic was so successfully used by rebel forces–and how traditional military techniques evolved to combat it.

Geoffrey Herbert Malins is the first war ‘kinematographer’ in history. The documentary he shot during the Battle of the Somme drew over 20 million British viewers in 1916. For years controversy has raged around the film due to its disconcerting violence and overt propagandist agenda,. But it is Cayos de Agua that steals our hearts: the light that surrounds this small strip of sand which is inhabited only by birds, makes this one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. As we weigh anchor, we sail to Dos Mosquises, headquarters of the Fundacion Cientifica los Roques, where an expert marine biologist shows us the different species of marine turtle. Here the Fundacion has chosen to guard and protect these marine animals, breeding them in captivity until they are one year old, then releasing them into the sea.

An investigation into a worldwide ecological disaster that could endanger the whole of humanity. The future of our food resources depends on one small insect - the western honey bee, or Apis mellifera. Indeed, it is the most important agricultural pollinator on our planet given that one third of our food supply depends directly on pollination from bees. This documentary tells the story of a worldwide ecological disaster that has been waiting to happen for several generations. It was filmed over an 18-month period in France, Germany, the U.S., Canada and Scotland and retraces the various leads carried out by research scientists in order to try and understand and to stop the declining numbers of domestic and wild bees. Scientists are not the only professionals to figure at the centre of this drama. Beekeepers are in the front line, and striking contrasts exist among beekeepers' experiences in different countries, in various economic situations. The documentary seeks to understand how the long-enjoyed harmonious relationship between man and bee has now undergone such a radical change. It seeks to find a solution that goes beyond science. A solution that cannot be found without thoroughly re-examining our agricultural practice and our model of society. Can we rise to the challenge? Legends say they are man-eaters, that even crocodiles fear them. Some say they’re the ghosts of the river, ‘demon fish’ that bring bad luck. Few people have ever been lucky enough to see one in the flesh and for angling legend Andy Coetzee, coming face to face with a Goliath Tigerfish is a lifelong dream. He will do almost anything to feed his obsession and unravel the mystery behind Africa’s Piranha! Andy has travelled the world in search of the most elusive fish on the planet. He’s obstinate, passionate and determined and when it comes to fishing, he’s been there and done it all. But one big fish still eludes him – the Goliath Tigerfish! We’re headed upstate to Albany and Saratoga Springs. We’ll take the Albany capital tour and see five former NY governors who would become US Presidents. Then, we’ll board the USS Slater and see how America defended its fleet against German U-boats in WWII. We’ll sample the mineral water in Saratoga Springs, and bet the farm at their famous thoroughbred raceway. Then, we’ll learn how important the Battle of Saratoga was for America’s future at Saratoga battlefield.
