THE Mystery OF THE Disappearing BEES
An investigation into a worldwide ecological disaster that could endanger the whole of humanity. The future of our food resources depends on one small insect - the western honey bee, or Apis mellifera. Indeed, it is the most important agricultural pollinator on our planet given that one third of our food supply depends directly on pollination from bees. This documentary tells the story of a worldwide ecological disaster that has been waiting to happen for several generations. It was filmed over an 18-month period in France, Germany, the U.S., Canada and Scotland and retraces the various leads carried out by research scientists in order to try and understand and to stop the declining numbers of domestic and wild bees. Scientists are not the only professionals to figure at the centre of this drama. Beekeepers are in the front line, and striking contrasts exist among beekeepers' experiences in different countries, in various economic situations. The documentary seeks to understand how the long-enjoyed harmonious relationship between man and bee has now undergone such a radical change. It seeks to find a solution that goes beyond science. A solution that cannot be found without thoroughly re-examining our agricultural practice and our model of society. Can we rise to the challenge? On board of the strangest Cessna in the whole of Venezuela. Vittorio, a man who feels that his personal space is more in the air rather than on the round, is taking us from the North to the South, leaving from Gran Roque Island. We first fly over the Los Roques archipelago, to then land on a runway made of sand, on the island of La Tortuga, a long strip of land and sand that is inhabited only by a few fishermen. Flying again we follow the waterways of this region and re-fuel in Ciudad Bolivar, a city on the banks of the great Orinoco river, we then fly over the vast and savage territory of the Gran Sabana dominated by the Tepuy and the famous Canaima waterfall, until we reach our final destination: The Salto Angel, the highest waterfall in the world, which is named after it’s discoverer, the pilot Jimmy Angel, the idol of our friend Vittorio.

Distant Shores - Waterford & Barrow Estuary
Series 8 of Distant Shores follows hosts, Paul and Sheryl Shard, on a voyage aboard their 49-foot sailboat, Distant Shores II, from the south coast of England to the Republic of Ireland where they sail to ports along the Irish Sea as they head north to Northern Ireland and Belfast where the ship Titanic was built. Next they sail to Scotland where they transit through the Crinan and Caledonian Canals, then explore the remote islands of Shetland, before crossing the notorious North Sea to the west coast of Norway. In Norway they explore the attractions in major towns as well as small fishing ports and sail down the world's longest fjord. They cross the North Sea once again to visit the Orkney Islands and Outer Hebrides of Scotland before making a passage south to the Brittany coast of France. Paul and Sheryl set sail from Chichester Harbour in England and sail to Waterford on the southeast coast of the Republic of Ireland where they learn about the production of crystal before sailing to New Ross to visit the Dunbrody emmigrant ship and join a local boater for a trip down the Barrow River, one of Ireland's inland waterways.

Who came up with the idea of canned food? It began with a battle between French and British armies, two centuries ago. Napoleon Bonaparte faced many problems with his goal to dominate Europe, one of which was feeding a large and sprawling army. In 1809 Napoleon held a contest, with a prize of 12,000 francs for the person who could come up with the most innovative method of preserving food. The winner was Nicolas François Appert who submitted a method of boiling and sealing food in glass bottles. Well if the French were going to travel farther and farther, the British needed to invent something as well: canning. However, opening the cans was quite a challenge – soldiers worked with stones and bayonets and it was only 30 years later that someone designed the first can opener! Although cans travel much easier across a battlefield, for decades they would not only mysteriously explode, but would also cause the harshest diseases. But how could the scientists of those days know? It wasn't until 50 years after Appert that Louis Pasteur discovered why canning (generally) worked so well. By testing the influence of air on broths, he did away with the idea that things spoiled ‘spontaneously’ and launched his ‘germ theory’. Even though canned foods became safer, they didn’t taste any better. The ultra-lengthy boiling process was obviated with the help of pressure-cooking. And now, the future brings ‘zapped’ canned food, something called ‘raddaperization’. Does the name ring a bell?

As it turns out, modern science proves that bloodletting does help in rare cases. In fact, bloodsucking leeches are excellent helpers to cure wounds. We now know that one little creature is the cause for many diseases: bacteria. But until the mid-19th century, many felt that such tiny organisms such as germs could not possibly kill larger ones such as humans. After all, we can’t even see them with the naked eye! How then, did we discover them? Thanks to one doctor who decided to take a good look …between his teeth. Since then, we have found a cure for most bacterial infections in the form of Antibiotics. This was accidently discovered by Alexander Fleming - whilst leaving the office for a holiday, he left a culture plate smeared with his personal nasal mucus on his lab bench only to find that mould surrounding this mucus actually inhibited its growth. In 1989, CIA operative Kurt Muse was imprisoned at the notorious Carcel Modelo in Panama for his role in organizing radio transmissions against dictator Manuel Noriega. That December, an elite group of the US Delta Force breached the roof of the prison, and one of the most daring close quarter battle operations in history began. From the dramatic helicopter crash and wounding of several Delta operators to the extraction of the entire team by the 5th Infantry Division, this is prime material for CQB analysis.
