A YEAR IN THE WILD - EP.4
It is April, and large groups of blacktip and tiger sharks are gathering off the South African Coast. They are waiting for the onset of one of nature’s most spectacular mass migrations: the annual sardine run. Like the cold ocean current that gives rise to the extraordinary numbers of African pilchards and their predators during the Sardine Run, the frigid Benguela current that runs northwards along the arid coastline of Namibia also supports a remarkable diversity of life. Monk parakeets are highly sociable, quirky South American parrots, but unlike all other parrots, they build complex nesting structures that can reach the size of a car, with individual compartments for each nesting pair. South American parakeets aren’t the only birds turned architects: the social weaver birds of southern Africa also construct permanent nests on trees, large enough to house dozens of bird families, often stretching across several generations at a time. Like the weaverbirds, bats, too, tend to roost in large numbers. At this time of year, mothers and their young form part of the colony, with the young clinging closely to the front of their mothers until there are weaned at 6 months of age. In the Thong Pha Phoom National Park in Thailand, a pair of greater coucals have built a nest and laid a clutch of 4 eggs. By now, massive shoals of around 10 million Southern African Pilchards have gathered in the coastal waters of South Africa and begun their migration northwards. Like the dolphins during the Sardine Run, lions tend to work in teams when hunting large prey like buffalo. And right now, the need for the Xakanaxa pride to hunt and provide for their expanding family is greater than ever: they have new cubs to feed. A group of meerkats in South Africa is also busily caring for their growing family. Most of the clan has already left the family burrow to forage for insects and other small prey. In the Okavango Delta’s grassland, a pair of puff adders is engaged in a lengthy mating ritual.

Problem is, Lin Mao’s not responding to the anesthetic Jorge just administered and he has to decide what to do next...very quickly.

It’s not every day one of the cutest chimps in the zoo has a first birthday. And it’s not every day Garoe, the one-year old chimp wakes up to a tasty cake hanging in his enclosure. On the plains of East Africa an epic journey is underway. Millions of wildebeest and thousands of zebras march in an annual, circular migration in search of lush grazing.Two major rivers, the Mara and the Grumeti, intersect their route and force the herds to cross. Crocodiles, the biggest living on earth, wait in these rivers to take advantage of this moving feast. In this ever-changing waterscape successful predators adapt their hunting strategies to suit the shifting environment.On the Grumeti River, DC is the Dominant Croc of a lose gang called the RagTags. When the wildebeest arrive to drink, these Pit Stops, Zone 1, are the crocs’ first challenge. It doesn’t go well for the RagTags. These smaller, inexperienced crocs don’t calculate their launch speed correctly, so opportunities are missed. DC finds a pool where he can work alone. He grabs an impressive male zebra, but the pool’s not deep enough to drown it. The zebra fights hard and DC is forced to let it go.Deep Water, Zone 2, is a zone exclusive to the Mara River. Steep banks and fast-flowing water make it a river that favours the crocodiles. Wildebeest plunge off the cliffs straight into the deep channel. To hunt here is easy: Swim, launch and drown.There’s no free lunch on the Grumeti. DC waits for the next opportunity. He picks up vibrations in the water that tell him the herds have started to cross. Zone 3, The Shallows, is a dangerous zone for crocodiles. Wildebeest gallop across the river and crocodiles can get trampled. DC captures a calf but the RagTags share with him and DC is left with a single mouthful. Frustrated with his small portion, DC drives the gang away. Theft is a viable strategy in the Grumeti. The RagTags follow DC when he tries to hoard his next prize. When DC spots one of the gang members and gives chase, the RagTags move in and steal the carcass.DC finds another opportunity on the Rocks, Zone 4. Wildebeest are forced to walk slowly to avoid tripping and falling. DC causes panic in the ranks and grabs a calf.This time he won’t share. He flicks the calf until the head tears right off the neck. Exhausted from the hunt, DC is forced to rest and recharge. He’s not alone. This pool belongs to a hippopotamus. Luckily the hippo is more curious that confrontational and he leaves DC alone. As the season moves on, the Grumeti River dries up. Only the tail-enders of the herd remain and DC needs one last kill before the herds disappear for good.On the Mara River the water itself is so treacherous that many animals die while crossing. Carcasses pile up on the riverbank, and the crocs here can scavenge long after the wildebeest have left. DC will have to hunt if he wants a stockpile. When the herds unexpectedly drink at the hippo pool, DC sets up for a Pit Stop attack. But suddenly they start to cross and it becomes a Rock Crossing!Wildebeest trample over him but he strikes a big wildebeest bull and holds tight. The hippo pool is not deep enough for a quick death. But DC outlasts the wildebeest in the tug-of-war. The Mara and Grumeti are two very different hunting grounds that require unique skillsets from the crocodiles. In both these trenches the predators responded to the nuances of the landscape and triumphed. At the Pit Stops and Rocks, in Deep and Shallow Water they learned to modify their hunting techniques – and thrived. And next year, when the herds return, these quiet waters will once again transform into Predator Zones.

Journeys IN INDIA - TAMIL NADU: Chennai, Pondicherry AND MORE
Chennai, formerly known as Madras, can trace its roots back to a tiny fishing village. Bill explores the city’s growth under the British East India Company, with visits to Fort St. George and the Fort Museum. We then travel to the nearby Sao Tome Basilica, the church and burial site of St. Thomas the Apostle. In Pondicherry, French influences can still be felt in the tree-lined streets, colonial mansions and cafés. Its beautiful setting on the Bay of Bengal makes Pondicherry a delightful place to spend the day. We also visit the ancient port city of Mahabalipuram, where the landscape is dominated by carved-stone architecture. The final highlight of our tour is the Descent of Ganga, which is the world’s largest bas-relief carving.

Our destination is the island of Rodrigues, in the Mascarene archipelago, a volcanic folly that is only 109 square kilometres surrounded by an uncontaminated coral reef. We visit the island and discover its’ beauty on land, underground and also underwater. In the Francois Leguat protected reserve we are privileged to see hundreds of Tortoises, a varying ages and sizes, as they mate undisturbed by our presence and our cameras. A local guide takes us to discover a system of caves that develops 18 metres below sea level. But it is the population of Rodriguez that surprises us the most: A people who have not adopted different ways or customs, but that live their lives proudly with the knowledge that they are fortunate to have been born in such an island paradise both on land and sea.

BLUE WORLD
Jonathan heads down to the shipwrecks of North Carolina (USA) to observe how these wrecks have become home to thousands of animals, including Sand Tiger sharks. But instead of chasing all the fish, the sharks are protecting many of them! Then, Jonathan visits the School for Field Studies in the Turks & Caicos Islands to learn how college students conduct fieldwork in their pursuit of degrees in Marine Studies. He helps tag sharks, study conch and investigate marine protected areas!
BLUE WORLD
In a shark-filled adventure, Jonathan travels to the Bahamas to meet Neal Harvey, a world-renown shark handler who will attempt to teach Jonathan how to put Caribbean Reef sharks into a relaxed state known as tonic immobility! Then, Jonathan heads to NASA’s Neutral Buoyancy Lab in Houston, Texas (USA), where astronauts train for space walking underwater, in a giant pool about half the size of a soccer field. Jonathan gets a rare and fascinating look into this high-tech diving as he ventures underwater with the astronauts.

Despite the constant looming threat of globalization, some beloved old traditions, like the Szechuan chili and hotpots are still mainstays in Chinese culture. But while some traditions thrive, some face big challenges. A rare look at the enigma of Tibet shows a culture approaching a crossroads. Even the iconic pandas are dwindling if not for the aggressive breeding programs. Will old traditions stand a chance against the steam-rolling speeds and force of the new world?
Desperate HOURS - EP. 05
In this episode, you can run for cover but you can’t hide from the wild winds. That means hurricanes, cyclones, tornadoes, twisters and typhoons. They’re all pretty much different names for the same thing, no? Powerful wind storms. Well no, not necessarily. Hurricanes mostly form over warm ocean water and once they have gathered momentum, can be up to 600 miles across. A tornado on the other hand, is a rapidly spinning tube of air which touches both the ground and the clouds above. In the US, they are often referred to as twisters. Did you know that hurricanes twist and turn in anticlockwise fashion in the Northern Hemisphere but in a clockwise direction in the Southern Hemisphere? Or that tornadoes can travel at speeds of up to 200 miles per hour? They can demolish large buildings, uproot trees and pick up and hurl vehicles hundreds of feet away, as if they were mere playthings. A tornado’s path of destruction can be anywhere in excess of a one mile wide, and some 50 miles long. 1000 tornadoes are reported in the United States in a typical year. Fortunately, only two percent of these are labeled “violent”, but that’s enough to create plenty of havoc annually.

After the fall of the soviet union many countries remained in dispute in the early nineties despite eastern Europe‘s independence. In 1994 a bitter confl ict broke out between the forces of the Chechnen independence movement and the Russian regular army. Boteti: THE Returning RIVER
For 20 years the Boteti River in northern Botswana has not flowed. What was once an expansive and prolific body of water gradually dried up, leaving zebras, hippos, elephants and crocodiles dependant on the few pools formed from the occasional rains.But now, for the first time in 30 years, rain has fallen in sufficient quantities hundreds of miles to the north in the Angolan highlands, sending a stream of water through the river bed. After years of extreme drought, the river has finally returned in all its glory, transforming the landscape. Filmed in stunning HD, ‘Boteti – The Returning River’ documents this extraordinary transformation and the dramatic changes it brings to the resident animals.During the years of drought, we see how desperate battles for survival play out along the dormant river, watched over by the elephants of the area. One of the few species that adapts well to the situation by carefully conserving what little water is available, the elephant is an expert at digging channels in the mud so water collects in sufficient quantities to drink.Vultures lurk ominously on the dusty banks adjacent to the pools, waiting patiently for dehydration to claim another victim. Crocodiles use caves to escape the heat of the sun and only emerge reluctantly to hunt when huge flocks of quelea birds arrive at the water. The crocs, along with numerous other species, are bound to this area because there is simply nowhere else to go. Beyond the dry river bed, semi-desert extends for hundreds of miles in all directions.With the arrival of the life-giving waters, there is a burst of activity. Fish and dragonflies soon emerge with their attendant predators and frogs appear in their thousands, attracting huge numbers of birds. The deluge also brings instant relief to the hippos by flushing out their fetid pools, while elephants celebrate by swimming and hosing each other down. Jackals and packs of wild dogs appear from nowhere to harass the drinking herds.But the most significant change occurs when the water reaches the parched wasteland of the Makgadigadi Salt Pans. Here, the coming of the flood sees flocks of pelican, flamingo and red-billed teal arrive to set up new breeding colonies.Filmed over a period of two years, this film provides a lasting and unique record of the transformation of an entire environment and contains many examples of previously unrecorded behaviour.

On the North-Western tip of Greenland, fathers give their boys small dog sledges as soon as they can walk. The toy is meant to teach them hunting, a survival skill for Polar Inuits. Increasingly fewer boys, however, want to become hunters. 12-year-old Qaaqqukannguaq is an exception. During the spring holidays, he is going to accompany his father on a hunting trip for the first time. For several days, they will cross the ice desert on dog sledges, covering the 70 km from Savissivik, their tiny community, to Cape York.
