Sheikh Yasin Al-Tuhami - Fes Festival
Sheikh Yasin al-Tuhami live at Fes; A great Sufi or rather 'Munshid' singer, Sheikh Yasin al-Tuhâmi is one of the greatest Egyptian representatives of this tradition of poetry and declamation. The son of the Imam at the Great Mosque, he was always fascinated by Sufi art and taught himself music from an early age. He belongs to a tradition of religious chant where theory and practice are closely intertwined. His incantations come from the Islam of the street, his improvisations convey reassurance and hope, taking pleasure in words, puns and rhymes. Fortunately, one doesn't have to speak Arabic to join in the trance. TV director Niko Sardjvéladzé (51 min)
Wynton Marsalis Septet AT JAZZ IN MARCIAC
Wynton Marsalis (trumpet), Walter Blanding (saxophone), Nash Theodore (saxophone), Mason Elliot (trombonne), Dan Nimmer (piano), Carlos Henriquez (double bass), Ali Jackson (drums); Trumpeter Wynton Marsalis has been coming to Jazz in Marciac since 1991, and has become its figurehead, always making a point of presenting an original programme. Now aged 52, he has proved himself to be a virtuoso, equally at ease with a demanding classical concerto or any era in the history of jazz, and placing his own mark on everything he plays. Regarded since the 1980s as a prodigy on his instrument, he has since affirmed his personality as a soloist, leader and composer. His mastery of improvisation and melody has earned the admiration of peers and public alike, as have his sense of swing and his determination not to cut himself off from his musical roots. His exceptional charisma has also led the locals at Marciac to take him to their hearts. (65 min)
