      • Melanie de Biasio - Montreal Jazz Festival

MELANIE DE BIASIO; This Belgian siren turned the jazz world upside down with her breathtaking album, No Deal. Singer-flautist Mélanie De Biasio summons the suspended pop style of Talk Talk, the erudite blues of Nina Simone, the eminent lyricism of Jeff Buckley and the ambience of Portishead and Pink Floyd, all of it pierced by majestic moments of silence. Her deep, shaded voice seems to have come from Elsewhere, casting an ethereal spell that has earned her the nickname 'the Belgian Billie Holiday.' Magic! Melanie de Biasio (lead); Pascal Paulus (vintage synths); Pascal Mohy (piano); Samuel Gerstmans (double bass) (53 min)

      • Morten Qvenild: Personal Piano - Oslo Jazz Festival

QVENILD PERSONAL PIANO @ Oslo Jazz Festival 2016; Morten Qvenild, a member of In The Country, who also accompanies Susanna Wallumrod in Susanna & The Magical Orchestra, presents a very personal kind of music. Qvenild drifts away from jazz standards, presenting works performed on his 'HyPer (sonal) Piano', a keyboard augmented with electronics. The Norwegian musician's compositions are varied, and may include his own vocals. He sometimes reduces the accompaniment to a bare minimum, a few melodic touches to support the melancholy of his timbre (Wild Horses). He feels at liberty, for example, to break the continuity of a piece like Kick And Glide, speeding up the tempo and calling on programs to give his piano a psychedelic and futuristic touch - in the company of a distorted guitar - taking us far away from traditional jazz. Record on August 17th 2016 at the Nasjonal Jazzscene Victoria, Oslo (Oslo Jazz Festival); TV director, Jean-François Hugel (75 min)

      • Pneuma, choreography by Carolyn Carlson

Pneuma - Air and dreams; Choreography by Carolyn Carlson; Opéra National de Bordeaux Ballet; Composer, Gavin Gryars; National Bordeaux Aquitaine orchestra; Conductor, Pieter-Jelle de Boer; In March 1999, Carolyn Carlson and the Opéra de Bordeaux ballet premiered 'Hydrogen Jukebox', a fascinating choreography with music by Philip Glass. The choreographer is back this season with an exciting project drawing its inspiration from an essay by French philosopher Gaston Bachelard, 'Air and dreams'. This time the music is by Gavin Bryars, a 'post-minimalist' composer who previously worked with William Forsythe, Lucinda Childs, Maguy Marin, Jirí Kylián and Merce Cunningham. Carlson's choreography explores the duality of the human being, between body and soul, gravity and elevation, matter and mind. An ode to human nature, at once passionate and poetic. Recorded at the Opéra National de Bordeaux on March 2014; TV Director, Yan Proefrock (85 min)
