      • Bill Frisell Trio - Melbourne International Jazz Festival

Bill Frisell Trio; Bill Frisell, guitar; Thomas Morgan, bass; Rudy Royston, drums; One of the world's most celebrated jazz guitarists, 'Bill Frisell plays the guitar the way Miles Davis played the trumpet' (The New Yorker). His distinctive style masterfully blends the inventiveness of jazz, the warmth of folk and country, the abstraction of the avant garde and the raw emotion of blues and rock. Don't miss this rare club performance by a giant of contemporary jazz. • The Necks - Melbourne International Jazz Festival

The Necks; Chris Abrahams, piano; Tony Buck, drums; Lloyd Swanton, bass; From unlikely beginnings as a band experimenting privately with no intention of ever performing in public, The Necks have gone on to achieve extraordinary worldwide acclaim for their unique music making. Now in their fourth decade of collaboration, the almost-telepathic rapport between the trio is one of the most compelling in live music. The Necks' live shows have been likened to an almost religious experience, conjuring a chemistry that defies description in orthodox terms. Performing off the back of Unfold, their most recent release and eighteenth as a band, this is an unmissable opportunity to experience one of this country's most iconic ensembles. Recorded on June 5th 2017 at The Jazzlab, Melbourne International Jazz Festival, Australia; TV Director, Mathieu Mastin (48 min)

      • Jason Moran 'Bandwagon' - Moods

Jason Moran (piano), Tarus Mateen (bass), Nasheet Waits (drums); According to 'Rolling Stone' magazine he is the 'the most provocative thinker of the current jazz scene'. Appropriate words to describe the pianist that samples Thelonious Monk, Jimi Hendrix and Turkish telephone calls and works closely with the Performance-Art-Icon Joan Jonas and with Ghostface Killah from Wu-Tang Clan. And so it goes further: 'Jazz Artist of the Year', 'Jazz Album of the Year', 'Pianist of the Year'. In 2011 the New York-based Jason Moran was simultaneously voted to the top of three year's best lists by the renowned 'Downbeat Magazine'. Recognition thus far for the career for the man from Houston, Texas, that - before reaching his thirtieth birthday - has gone straight to the heights of jazz culture. Moran knows the history of jazz piano; his music builds intensively upon it, however it is neither nostalgia nor copy, more a permeation of the tradition in order to create something of one's own. With him, original compositions sound just like classics that one knows, whilst he puts his own spin on standards such that one doubts whether in fact they actually come from him. The concerts of this trio are amongst the best that jazz can offer these days: the tradition at heart, the concept for tomorrow in the head and the fingers define the present. (52 min)

      • The Daptone Super Soul Revue - Jazz á Vienne

The Daptone Super Soul Revue featuring Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings, Charles Bradley and his Extraordinaires, Antibalas, The Sugarman 3 with special guests; If there's a label today in New York that still captures the spirit of vintage soul as defined by the artists of the Apollo Theatre, it has got to be Daptone Records. The label's revue is greatly anticipated for the return of its star Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings with their new album: 'Give the People What They Want' (2013). With their unique mix of rough Rhythm'n'blues, funk and lascivious ballads, Sharon and her eight funkateers revive a mighty and festive style of soul. On stage, Sharon Jones (a native of Alberta, like James Brown) is sensational. Equally at ease with funky train and shing a ling, her smoky voice harks back to the greatest hours at the Apollo. Singer Charles Bradley from Brooklyn is a survivor from the 70's. He recorded his first album ('No Time for Dreaming', on Daptone Rec.) at the age of 62 and is now enjoying success, telling his own story, that of a normal working guy who earned his living as a cook during the week and did James Brown impersonations at the weekend. His magnificent resurrection has now produced a second album, 'Victim of Love'. The proto funk spiced with afrobeat of the Antibalas gang and the chicken style saxophone of Neil Sugarman are further highlights of the revue. (87 min)
