An Evening with Avishai Cohen; INSO-Lviv Orchestra; Christian Schumann, Conductor; Avishai Cohen, Double bass and vocals; Omri Mor, Piano; Noam David, Percussion; Avishai Cohen is an Israeli jazz bassist, double bass player, composer and arranger who gained fame when he became a member of Chick Corea's band Origin. He has also performed with such stars as Daniel Perez, Bobby McFerrin, Jeff 'Tain' Watts, Jeff Ballard, Roy Hargrove, Herbie Hancock, Paquito D'Rivera and many others. Avishai has recorded 15 albums. Chick Corea considers him 'a genius musician', and Bass Player magazine named him one of the 100 most influential bassists of the 20th century. Moreover, Avishai is also an amazing singer. With support from the Embassy of Israel to Ukraine, Avishai will perform together with the INSO-Lviv Academic Symphony Orchestra. The artistic director of the orchestra, which was founded in 1998, is a People's Artist of Ukraine, legendary composer Myroslav Skoryk. The orchestra has won several awards, including a Radio Swiss Classic Love Award, a Golden Disc from Franz Xaver Mozart Klavierkonzerte and others. The performance with Avishai will be a new jazz experience for INSO-Lviv, following the orchestra's collaboration with composer and pianist Vadim Neselovskyi. He was sent to school in England at the age of 8 and he taught himself to play the piano and guitar in London. He gradually created a stunning rhythmic blend of smooth funk, Hendrix-style psychedelia, pure Ikeja reggae and Yoruba harmonies. He called it BluFunk. Keziah Jones hung out English pubs in central London before heading to Paris where he was spotted in the underground in 1991. The album Blufunk Is a Fact and the track Rhythm is Love were international hits. After venturing through the desert of the mid-90s, he struck gold in 2003 with his fourth album Black Orpheus then the unstoppable Nigerian Wood (2008). Keziah completed an ambitious double album in 2013 flitting between Los Angeles, Spain and his kingdoms in London and Lagos. The dandy fighter is well and truly back to win over his audience. The trumpeter trained at Berklee College of Music in Boston and his warm tone and unusual round notes are instantly recognisable. After working with McCoy Tyner, Prince, Marcus Miller, Eddie Palmieri, Mos Def, Thom Yorke and Solange Knowles, the musician from Crescent City is now the pin-up boy for jazz fusion. His grandfather is the iconic Big Chief Donald Harrison Sr. who managed four tribes of Black Indians (Christian actually started out in one in 1989). The Louisiana trumpeter's sound straddles hip hop, soul and jazz and he appeared a decade ago with the album Rewind That (2006). He was hit by the full force of Hurricane Katrina and devoted his next record (Anthem, 2007) to portraying the human and cultural disaster. After Live at Newport, he recorded Yesterday You Said Tomorrow in 2010 inspired by the 60s groovy jazz played by artists on the Blue Note record label. Christian Scott is one of a long line of Louisiana artists who have been reinventing jazz music for over a century. Chucho Valdés Quartet - Alfa Jazz Fest
Chucho Valdés Quartet; Chucho Valdés, piano; Yelsy Heredia, bass; Georvis Pico Milian, drums; Pedro Pablo Rodríguez, percussion; Chucho Valdés is a Cuban pianist, composer and arranger, a six-time Grammy Award winner and a three-time Latin Grammy Award winner, and one of the most influential Afro-Cuban musicians in history. His father, the famous Cuban pianist and bandleader Ramon 'Bebo' Valdés, was his first teacher. At the age of 3, little Chucho was already playing melodies he heard on the radio by ear with both hands in all kinds of tones. Chucho played in the famous Cuban band Irakere (1973-2005). He was also the band's founder, composer and arranger. Irakere combined traditional Afro-Cuban music, jazz, rock and classical music. Tribute to Irakere: Live at Marciac, dedicated to Irakere's 40th anniversary, won a Grammy Award as the best Latin jazz album of 2016. Chucho plays on tour and also gives music lessons. He recorded a duet with his father, Bebo, 'Juntos Para Siempre' (Grammy Award winner), and an album called Chucho's Steps, where he presented his new band, Afro-Cuban Messengers. Herbie Hancock believes Chucho is one of the most important figures in the world of Latin and piano jazz.
